While having some holiday downtime, Jo sent us an update on one of the highlights of her Christmas break.

Happy New Year to all!

Last month, I took part in the Southern California tradition of visiting the Festival of Lights at The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, where the entire property of the hotel is covered in nearly four million Christmas lights. There are also horse-drawn carriage rides, freshly fallen snow, animated Christmas figures, fireworks, a giant Christmas tree, and, of course, Santa Claus himself. The owners of The Mission Inn, Duane and Kelly Roberts, have been doing this incredible event for 21 years! It’s fantastic to see something on such a grand scale that’s put on for the enjoyment of the community. If you ever find yourself in California during the holiday season, the Festival of Lights a really cool thing to see with your family.

I hope everyone had a happy (and well-rested) holiday season!

Last month, Jo rolled up her sleeves and spent Thanksgiving serving meals to those in need through the Los Angeles Mission. Jo, alongside other celebrities from How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris to James Pickens, Jr. (of Grey’s Anatomy) and Disney’s Bella Thorne. “It was a great thing to do,” said Jo. “I got down and dirty and my goal was to get as many people fed with a hot, Thanksgiving meal as possible.” It’s a good reminder to me thankful for how much we have and how much we have to give to help others who aren’t so fortunate.”  Over the course of the day, 3000 pounds of turkey was served to LA’s homeless.

On October 27th, Jo attended the FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education) Walk in Los Angeles, California. FARE works on behalf of the 15 million Americans with food allergies, including all those at risk for life-threatening anaphylaxis. All in all it was “a great and inspiring day,” Jo said. If you are interested in finding or starting a local FARE walk in your area, click here for more information.

August was all about art for Jo as she attended the annual Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, California. The 2013 Pageant of the Masters celebrated the 80th birthday of living pictures – the original freeze frame – at the Festival of Arts. This year’s theme of “The Big Picture” also added a cinematic spin to its world-class presentation with classic masterpieces that inspired legendary filmmakers. Says Jo, “For those who are visiting California during this time of year or live in California I think it is a must see every year.”

The picture Jo includes here is a “selfie” with her own artistic spin, in the style of Andy Warhol.

Take a look at some of the incredible “living art” Jo saw in the POM photo gallery by clicking here.

The pageant runs from July 7- August 31. For more information on this year’s POM theme, click here.

Last month found Jo in Arizona where she and Darrin hung out for the weekend. They spent time taking in the desert landscape and hiking. In fact, despite her asthma, Jo climbed that mountain behind her, which is one mile high! Not bad, Jo!

This past month found Jo in New York, where she was in town to promote her new show, Family S.O.S. with Jo Frost. In the middle of her events, Jo found time to update us about press schedules, Katie Couric’s show, and meeting Chris O’Donnell.

It has been a crazy month of preparation leading up to the premiere of the show. I had been shooting pretty close till my departure date and then when I arrived in New York, I hit the ground running. Each show I did (from Dr. Oz to Katie and Joy Behar) requires me to talk about the same thing, but in a different way each time. I love what I do and the families I have the opportunity to work with, so each time I try to hit on a different aspect of what I do when I help a family. Or, as on the Katie show, I am given a family in the studio audience to help. In between the chatting about the show sometimes the tables turn to more personal topics. For the Dr. Oz Show, I talked about my severe allergy to nuts and shellfish — something most people didn’t know about me, but I revealed in order to help bring to light a serious situation that families need to be on the look out for and the world at large should be mindful of (can you believe they still serve peanuts on airplanes when so many children have extreme peanut allergies?!) There was a lot of press to do in one week in New York and very little down time, but was able to spend some evenings hanging out, doing some shopping in the Time Warner Center, and grabbing dinner with New York friends. A fun highlight of my trip was running into NCIS: LA’s Chris O’Donnell at the Better TV studios!

Jo recently visited the Jenesse Center in Los Angeles, California. The center provides “victims of domestic violence with a comprehensive, centralized base of support to assist them in addressing their immediate crisis and changing the patterns of their lives.” They help to end the cycle of domestic violence through sharing educating, providing resources to individuals, families, agencies, and communities. They are tireless advocates, which Jo recognized immediately upon speaking with individuals at the center. “I was really inspired by the staff and the families I encountered. These are some strong women who are working hard to secure the future for themselves and their children. I was glad to do what I could to help empower them to the best of my ability.”
