It’s natural for young children to feel ‘shy’ at some stage in their development. I prefer to use the word “Reserved.” If this behaviour is longer lasting or intensifies as the child grows older, it can become crippling – limiting their openness to new experiences and making it very hard for the child to socialize and meet new friends.

April is a great time to make outdoor play a part of your family’s daily routine. I’ve always believed that any activity is good for the body AND mind and this is especially true for our children.

With daycare costing more than college in many parts of the United States, families are finding creative ways to care for their children while making sure that the bills still get paid. For some households, this means one parent assuming the traditional breadwinner role while the other stays home with the children.

In honor of Valentine

In honor of Valentine’s Day, myself and my team asked children to tell us what love means to them. I’ve also been tweeting out a call to have you ask your kids what love means to them and tweet me their 10-15 second video reply. I’ll be retweeting some of my favorites leading up to Valentine’s Day.

Winter Blues. It’s an old name we prescribe to the feeling that winter has been going on for too long. Not only can this seasonal weather affect us as adults, but as young children, too. We all know that feeling of being cooped up like headless chickens and where those grey clouds feel like they are touching our heads. Sometimes we need something uplifting to shake away our winter blues. So what can we do to keep this at arm’s length?

Teaching children the importance of giving back and serving their community empowers them at a very young age. Whether it’s once a week or once a month, collaborating every family member in your household to be involved in giving back helps to create a lifelong habit of community service and brings everyone (no matter what their age) a feeling of goodwill and spirit around helping others.

Zero Tolerance is what we need to continue practicing. In light of it being National Bullying Prevention month I wanted to touch on this subject, as I answer many questions from parents on how to stop their children from being picked on at school. This made me think that if every parent took responsibility to raise their child with more empathy and respect, then we would reduce this problem greatly.

Recently, I overheard two rather loud child carers discussing this trend where more and more parents are taking their children to playdates and parties and staying the entire time at the event, even if they aren’t being asked to.
