I trust you were successful using the simple breathing technique I shared with you last month to help you reduce stress during the holidays. I know I had plenty of opportunities to practice it with the hustle and bustle of the holidays.

While having some holiday downtime, Jo sent us an update on one of the highlights of her Christmas break.

Happy New Year to all!

Last month, I took part in the Southern California tradition of visiting the Festival of Lights at The Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, where the entire property of the hotel is covered in nearly four million Christmas lights. There are also horse-drawn carriage rides, freshly fallen snow, animated Christmas figures, fireworks, a giant Christmas tree, and, of course, Santa Claus himself. The owners of The Mission Inn, Duane and Kelly Roberts, have been doing this incredible event for 21 years! It’s fantastic to see something on such a grand scale that’s put on for the enjoyment of the community. If you ever find yourself in California during the holiday season, the Festival of Lights a really cool thing to see with your family.

I hope everyone had a happy (and well-rested) holiday season!

The first weeks of the new year are a good time to schedule any yearly or semi-annually appointments for your kids, (like the dentist, eye doctor, etc). It makes it easier to remember when their last appointment was and allows you and your family to be ready to go in the new year without having to worry about the last routine doctor’s visit.

In author Catherine Gilbert Murdock’s latest book, fourteen-year-old Sarah Zorn intends to spend the Wisconsin summer with her “boyfriend” Curtis, waiting for a dead calf named Boris to decompose in time for the science fair. Her plans upend, however, when her fake-boyfriend strategy goes seriously awry just as her hippie Grandma Z invites her on a last-minute Roman holiday. As Sarah explores Italy’s ancient wonders, she can’t stop “boy-liking” Curtis . . . or puzzling over her grandmother’s odd behavior. Written as Sarah’s journal, this satisfying middle grade novel navigates the murky waters of first love, friendship, and family with heart and good humor. (A good read for those ages 10 & up).

Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford) is no ordinary archeologist. When we first see him, he is somewhere in the Peruvian jungle in 1936, running a booby-trapped gauntlet (complete with an over-sized rolling boulder) to fetch a solid-gold idol. He loses this artifact to his chief rival, a French archeologist named Belloq (Paul Freeman), who then prepares to kill our hero. In the first of many serial-like escapes, Indy eludes Belloq by hopping into a convenient plane. So, then: is Indiana Jones afraid of anything? Yes, snakes. The next time we see Jones, he’s a soft-spoken, bespectacled professor. He is then summoned from his ivy-covered environs by Marcus Brody (Denholm Elliott) to find the long-lost Ark of the Covenant. The Nazis, it seems, are already searching for the Ark, which the mystical-minded Hitler hopes to use to make his stormtroopers invincible. But to find the Ark, Indy must first secure a medallion kept under the protection of Indy’s old friend Abner Ravenwood, whose daughter, Marion (Karen Allen), evidently has a “history” with Jones. Whatever their personal differences, Indy and Marion become partners in one action-packed adventure after another, ranging from wandering the snake pits of the Well of Souls to surviving the pyrotechnic unearthing of the sacred Ark. (Rated PG).

Last month, Jo rolled up her sleeves and spent Thanksgiving serving meals to those in need through the Los Angeles Mission. Jo, alongside other celebrities from How I Met Your Mother star Neil Patrick Harris to James Pickens, Jr. (of Grey’s Anatomy) and Disney’s Bella Thorne. “It was a great thing to do,” said Jo. “I got down and dirty and my goal was to get as many people fed with a hot, Thanksgiving meal as possible.” It’s a good reminder to me thankful for how much we have and how much we have to give to help others who aren’t so fortunate.”  Over the course of the day, 3000 pounds of turkey was served to LA’s homeless.
